The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry’s proposed plans for clear-cutting near Ena Lake has some cottagers up in arms.
According to the MNRF’s Kenora district management forester Kyle Myschowoda, the new 10-year forest management plan will see several clear-cutting harvest projects undertaken within the region, which is what the MNRF says is best practice for emulating natural forest fire conditions within boreal forest locations.

“Up here in the north, we conduct clear-cut silvicultural systems because it best emulates the natural disturbance type that we’re trying to emulate,” Myschowoda said. “It’s based on fundamental principles of boreal ecology. Other types of [cutting] would not be appropriate in the boreal forest.”

At 4:18 p.m. Dec. 10, I walked upstairs to self-isolate for a week out of super caution that I might have contracted COVID-19 at my mom’s funeral.
To make it easier, I called on skills gained when paddling in wildernesses or backpacking for several days. In particular, I pretended I was camping in Woodland Caribou Provincial Park in northwestern Ontario where six of us spent a marvelous week nearly two decades ago.
