Costumes and comics at City Library
Don you favourite superhero costume, dress as movie villain, or pretend you’re a Manga character and join the festivities at Comic Fest this weekend.
With the ongoing success of the Marvel and DC movie franchises, Sunday’s Comic Fest at Cairns City Library has a morning of free activities dedicated to all things comic and cosplay.
Councillor Cathy Zeiger said that Comic Fest demonstrated the diversity of literature and activities available at Cairns Libraries.
“Modern libraries are so much more than aisles of books,” Cr Zeiger said.
“Across our Cairns Libraries branches, we have a great range of comic books and graphic novels available to suit readers from primary school age and up.
Breakdance with Olympic prospects

Breakdancing will be an official sport at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, and local b-girls and b-boys have been practicing breakdance maneuvers in hopes of repping Team USA. Throughout the county, breakers are “spontaneously” linking up via “social media,” according to b-girl Melissa Adao, and more formally at the Apex School of Movement and Culture Shock Training Academy.

For the recent Olympic qualifiers held on Instagram and Zoom, Adao, a 41-year-old Golden Hill dweller, busted funky grooves up top then got down with traditional footwork and freezes. “There are three judges who score you on the spot, based on a USA Breakin’ scoring system,” she explained. “I made the top eight bracket for all of the Olympic qualifiers I’ve entered, so I am happy!” The wins garnered her a spot at Austin, Texas, where face-to-face battles will ensue, and judges will decide who’ll progress one

Virgin Galactic’s rocket plane reached space for a second time in a test flight over California on Friday, climbing higher and faster than before while also carrying a crewmember to evaluate the long-awaited passenger experience. The winged spaceship soared at three times the speed of sound to an altitude of 55.8 miles (89.8 kilometers) before gliding to a safe landing.
