Eden Veterans Refuge to offer military women a hand up

Jacksonville nonprofit offers house for homeless women veterans

As a case manager for a Jacksonville nonprofit that helps at-risk women veterans, Natalie Marcano-Sidberry calls on her own military experience and subsequent struggles. She was in the U.S. Navy for 11 years. And she was homeless for a year after that, even after having brain surgery, employed but unable to get assistance because she somehow had too much income. It was a truly rough time. It was scary trying to find places to park at night, it was exhausting trying to maintain at work knowing I had no roof over my head, she said.  I was looking for a hand up but just couldn t get the assistance I needed. … I had to learn to smile even though I was dying inside.

It was my honor : St Augustine Beach man rode his bike across the US for veterans

(Tribune News Service) The cross-country journey wasn t easy for Dave Parramore. He set off on his bicycle from San Diego, Calif., on March 1, planning to make it back to his hometown in St. Augustine Beach on his bicycle alone. The goal: to raise awareness of military veterans affected by COVID-19 and raise money for the nonprofit Wounded Warrior Project. Fierce storms in West Texas forced him to take a train from El Paso to Austin for safety reasons, and he got flat tires in New Mexico, among other challenges. But he also was able to connect with veterans and friends along the way.

Denise The Vamp DeVille Zubizarreta Chronicles Pain Through Art

Zubizarreta, who has Aspberger s syndrome, found that the best way to avoid bullying was to enroll in various extracurricular activities and after-school programs. “I partially believe it was better to be at cheerleading practice or at JROTC than to be on the streets of Union City or Hialeah in the early ’90s,” she says. “It was also because I didn’t feel like I fit in, and I would rather be doing something than [be] around more people who made me feel insignificant.” Zubizarreta, who attended high school in Hialeah, had a knack for radio and got an internship with Radio Disney AM 990 Miami.
