Calgary police officer cycles in support of military families

CALGARY A long-time Calgary police officer and former member of the Royal Air Force has put his body to the test in an effort to raise funds for military families and veterans in need. Ian McCaughtrie set off Saturday morning and completed a 90-kilometre bike ride back and forth from the Bomber Museum in Nanton to Chain Lakes Provincial Park. The ride is meant to honour the 78th anniversary of what’s known as the Dambuster Raid or Operation Chastise when Royal Air Force No. 617 Squadron used a purpose-built “bouncing bomb” to carry out an attack on German Dams.

Local Facebook Page Creates Global Cookbook That Keeps on Giving

By Brad Jennings Mar 8, 2021 4:48 AM A local Facebook group, originally meant to share recipes, has led to national best selling cookbooks and thousands of dollars donated to local charities. Dawna Doell the creator of The Official Quarantine Cookbook, says it started as a Martensville centered Facebook page to share recipes. She wanted to use the recipes as a way to teach her kids some practical skills during the pandemic.  However, the page grew substantially and through thousands of shares now has over 64,000 members from all over the world. Doell says the page created a sense of community when a lot of people have been socially-isolated from the people they are used to seeing.  She adds during the pandemic people have turned to cooking at home, and not relying on pre-made foods.  Doell says it has put a lot of people back in the kitchen.
