Cayucos Polar Bear Dip plans for return to ring in 2022

Cayucos Polar Bear Dip plans for return to ring in 2022 and last updated 2021-01-02 01:44:47-05 Thousands normally brave the chilly, ocean water on the 1 st day of each year on Cayucos Beach, but this year’s Polar Bear Dip was canceled due to safety precautions. “See you in Jan 2022” is the message on the Cayucos Chamber of Commerce website, signaling a no-go for the Polar Bear Dip in 2021, but some took to the water Friday morning because they’ve done it for years. “Every year, it’s been a tradition for us to come out here, run in, wash clean the last year, and start out a new year,” said Cristi Fry, a Cayucos resident who has been participating in the Polar Bear Dip for about 10 years. “This year, it’s more important than ever.”

Over 200 turn out for Cayucos Polar Bear Dip

–Although the Cayucos Chamber of Commerce officially canceled the annual New Year’s Day Polar Bear Dip this year, more than 200 people took the plunge at noon on Friday. No electronics amplified the spontaneous countdown, however, the enthusiasm carried the message. Families, friends, costumed participants, and a Fresno contingent wearing plastic tubes displaying the American flag charged into the Pacific Ocean. In a typical year, thousands would attend the event. Scott Reneau of Paso Robles took the New Year’s Day plunge while his wife, Emily Reneau, watched with bated breath. “That was cold,” he said afterward. “This is my 21st year of taking the polar bear plunge. It was the first year for Sam, my black lab. 2021 is going to be a good year.”

and last updated 2021-01-01 01:54:22-05 “See you in 2022!” That’s the message from the Cayucos Chamber of Commerce regarding this year’s Polar Bear Dip. The Carlin Soulé Memorial Polar Bear Dip usually attracts thousands to the beach in Cayucos on New Year’s Day. Like many events already this year, COVID-19 concerns have forced organizers to cancel the 2021 event. The Cayucos Chamber of Commerce is asking people to abide by county and state social distancing guidelines and not gather in groups this New Year s Day. The Avila Beach Polar Bear Plunge event has also be canceled and is set to take place again in 2022.
