A Carilion Clinic ICU nurse said Wednesday that she felt a little weepy in getting the first of two vaccination shots that will protect her from COVID-19.
Mary Rogers, who cares for the sickest COVID patients at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, said she and her husband, a Carilion EMT, feel that the vaccine will protect them, their families, patients and the community.
âI strongly support this and I believe in it, and I hope in the coming future to return to some sense of normalcy. I think that is what Iâm banking on. There have been so many life events impacted by COVID,â she said during a media video call.
The first shipments of COVID-19 vaccines arrived Tuesday in Roanoke against the backdrop of a surge in infections and hospitalizations.
Dr. Cynthia Morrow, director of the Roanoke City and Alleghany Health Districts, said during her weekly media briefing that 1,700 new infections were reported during the past week and that 63 people became so ill they were admitted to a hospital.
âFifteen percent of our cases were reported last week, which is really astonishing to me. Not that itâs unexpected, but nevertheless really disheartening,â she said.
âIt doesnât have to be this way. If everyone did what they needed to do our world would look different right now,â she said. âAs tired as everyone is, as exhausting as this pandemic has been, we donât want to go into the new year in the current positions we are in. UPDATE FROM ROANOKE CITY POLICE: Roanoke Police have arrested Christopher Roberts, 34 of Roanoke, and charged him with DUI and DUI Manslaughter regarding this incident. Throughout the course of the investigation, Fatality Investigators determined Mr. Roberts was driving the vehicle at the time of this incident. The deceased victim, Ms. Carpenter, was his passenger. Warrantsfor DUI and DUI Manslaughter were obtained. On December 15, 2020, Roanoke Police Officers, working with the U.S. Marshals Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, located Mr. Roberts at a residence in Dry Fork, VA. He was taken into custody there without incident and all outstanding warrants were served.
