A 75-year-old taxi driver has been jailed for four years for failing to remain at the scene of a road crash in which a Kerry-born consultant psychiatrist was killed as he walked home to his hotel from a Christmas party.
Denis McSweeney from Pouladuff Road, Ballyphehane in Cork pleaded guilty to four charges relating to a road traffic collision which claimed the life of Tralee native, Dr Martin Lawlor (49) on the Kinsale Road in Cork on December 15th 2018.
Mr McSweeney pleaded guilty to failing to give appropriate information to gardaí, failing to keep the vehicle at or near the occurrence, failing to report an occurrence and failing to stop his vehicle after an occurrence.

A retired businessman and former scout leader has been sent forward for trial charged with 27 sex offences.
David Barry, 72, of Montrose, Firgrove Gardens in Bishopstown, Cork city, appeared before Cork District Court in December where he was charged with 26 counts of indecent or sexual assault and one count of attempted indecent assault.
The charges allege that Mr Barry either indecently or sexually assaulted eight boys and attempted to indecently assault a ninth boy at an address in Cork.
The alleged offences occurred on dates between 1986 and 2005.
A former scout leader has been remanded for trial on 27 charges of sexual or indecent assault and attempted indecent assault against nine young boys.
David Barry (72), a retired businessman and former scout leader, appeared before Judge Olann Kelleher at Cork District Court on charges which relate to a lengthy Garda investigation into abuse allegations dating back over 30 years.
Mr Barry of Montrose, Firgrove Gardens, Bishopstown, Cork faces a total of 26 counts of sexual or indecent assault and one count of attempted indecent assault.
A total of nine boys – all former members of the Catholic Boy Scouts of Ireland (CBSI) – had levelled the allegations involved. The complainants are all now adults.

A 46-YEAR-OLD man has been sent forward for trial on charges of threatening to kill two members of the family of 20-year-old Cork student, Cameron Blair, who was murdered in the city in January of 2020.
At Cork District Court today, the book of evidence was served on on Noel Barry of Cherry Tree Road in Cork city.
