CARTHAGE â During the June Carthage Central School District Board of Education meeting, Emily Remington-Burker was appointed as the Carthage High School principal, effective July 1, at an annual salary of $111,000.
Mrs. Remington-Burker replaces Kathleen Beattie, who in January began as the director of student services in the General Brown Central School District.
Growing up in the north country, Mrs. Remington-Burker graduated from Alexandria Central School, studied at Jefferson Community College, and SUNY Oswego where she received her bachelor of applied science in education/social studies and further went on to complete her masterâs of science education in literacy through SUNY Potsdam. To further her career in education, Mrs. Burker then completed the Educational Leadership Program with SUNY Oswego, receiving her School Building Leader and District Leader Certifications.
Diane M. Ames, 77, of 11 N. Jefferson St., West Carthage, died Friday afternoon, May 21, 2021 at St. Johnâs Episcopal Hospital in Queens, from complications after a fall.
Diane was born on October 16, 1943 in Carthage, the daughter of the late George E. and Rose M. (Stewart) Bezanilla. She was a 1961 graduate of Carthage Central and went on to attend Potsdam State. She married Harry O. Ames on December 28, 1963 in Black River. She worked at Grayâs Flower Shop, Luther & Scanlin Insurance, Freight Yard Gifts and for many years was a computer aide for the Carthage Central School District, retiring in 1995. For many years, the couple has wintered in New Smyrna Beach, Florida where she loved taking long walks on the beach.
CARTHAGE The public budget hearing for the Carthage Central School District will be held in the Carthage High School auditorium at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a virtual link will also be available on the district webpage at www.carthagecsd.org. The link will be live at 6 p.m.
District residents in the village will be asked on May 18 to approve the $65,752,853 budget for the 2021-22 school year, along with the library proposition and two Board of Education seats.
The tentative budget holds a 1.89% increase from the adopted budget from the 2020-21 school year. The tax levy will remain stable again this year with a 0% change as compared to last year and the three previous years.
