Leaders pledge zero carbon emissions in Oxford by 2040

Plans to make Oxford zero-carbon by 2040 have been welcomed by campaigners and politicians. Leaders and organisations across Oxford have pledged to achieve net zero carbon emissions across the city by 2040. A group of 21 leaders from the city’s universities, institutions and major businesses signed the Zero Carbon Oxford Charter at a summit co-ordinated by Oxford City Council. It was attended by both universities, both hospital trusts, businesses including BMW, Unipart and LandSec, transport providers, schools and colleges plus the county council. The council’s scientific adviser Nick Eyre, professor of energy and climate change at Oxford University, told the summit the 2040 net zero date was technically achievable and ambitious. A detailed road map towards the target will be published this summer.

Why we are holding a zero carbon summit in Oxford today

In the face of impossible odds, each of us is meeting the challenges created by the pandemic. It can feel overwhelming and never-ending, but we are holding on. Why? Each of us, in our lives, is doing what the science has been telling us we must do. We are overcoming setbacks and pushing through doubt to protect life and live the love we feel for everyone we desperately want to stay well and safe. When there is so much going on, and the virus is damaging the lives and economies of those around us, how many of us really have the energy to hear about the rise of new challenges?
