(AP) A medical examiner has identified human remains found in southeast New Mexico last year near the U.S.-Mexico border. The Carlsbad Current-Argus reported that the medical investigator s office at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque identified the remains as 43-year-old Brandi Fernandez. An autopsy determined Fernandez died from a gunshot wound to the head in a homicide. The skeletal remains were found in March 2020 by hikers in a rural wash south of the community of Malaga. The Eddy County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death and offering a reward of up to $4,000 for anyone with information that leads to a suspect or arrest.

New Mexico Gov Signs Bill With $300M for Road Upgrades : CEG

Wed May 19, 2021 - West Edition #11 Associated Press CARLSBAD, N.M. (AP) A coalition of energy companies has thanked government leaders after receiving millions of dollars of road improvements in the southeast New Mexico. Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed the $7.4 billion state budget for next year, which includes $300 million for roadway infrastructure and improvements, the Carlsbad Current-Argus reported. Lawmakers agreed to allocate $87 million for road projects across southeast New Mexico from that funding, said Tracee Bentley, CEO of the Permian Strategic Partnership. The approved budget and legislation will have an enormous impact on road safety advancements in southeastern New Mexico, Bentley said. The projects supported through this funding will allow for direct action to improve priority roads projects in local communities, as well as help expedite work already under way on state roadways.

With COVID-19 restrictions relaxed, Eddy County resumes local events

Loosening COVID-19 restrictions in Eddy County meant numerous local events were allowed to resume after a year of virtual gatherings or outright cancellations.  Eddy County was one of 24 counties across New Mexico to move to the Turquoise category on Friday after the State of New Mexico updated key health metrics used to assign risk levels to counties under the Red-Yellow-Green COVID-19 framework now in effect, read a news release from the Office of Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham.  Turquoise is assigned to counties with the lowest risk of infections, and brings with it the least restrictive policies.  As of Friday, six counties were at the Green Level, and three were at yellow, meaning 24 of New Mexico s 33 counties were at the least restrictive levels.
