250 engineering structures being built to mitigate impacts of GLOFs

Islamabad: The government is developing 250 engineering structures including dams, ponds, spillways, and drainage systems to reduce the risk of floods under a multi-billion project Scaling-up of Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) risk reduction in Northern Pakistan.
According to the details, the climate change ministry is also coordinating with the Gilgit-Baltistan government and they are using Digital Terrain Model (DTM) to calculate the glacial lake volume to develop GLOF simulation to anticipate downstream risk.
The details revealed that both of them are also making concerted efforts to develop disaster management policies and install weather monitoring stations, flood gauges, hydrological modelling, and early warning systems to enhance the ability to respond rapidly to flood scenarios.
Ministry monitoring situation at Shisper Glacier

Islamabad: The government is closing monitoring the situation in Shisper Glacier where rise in temperature can again cause glacial lake outburst and pose danger to lives of thousands of people living in the nearby areas.
According to the details, the climate change ministry has approached the local authorities and directed them to keep vigil over the situation and provide real-time data to all the relevant government departments.
An official said “We are currently monitoring the data of at least 150 areas that are vulnerable to the climate change and may face flood-like situation due to rising temperature.” The data showed that the surge in Shisper Glacier is unpredictable and sporadic, making it all the more risky for the local people.

In a press statement issued here on Sunday, he explained that the measures being taken under the Prime Minister s world-acclaimed vision for Clean Green Pakistan include nation-wide massive tree plantation and protection activities, promotion of renewable energy, shelving of coal-based energy projects, promotion of electric vehicles, mass transit system, establishment of new national parks and protection of the existing ones and launch of US$ 500 million green euro bond for overall ecosystem restoration in the country.
