NEWARK The Canal Market District begins its sixth season on Friday, when the Newark High School band kicks off the first farmers market in what may be the start of a return to normal life after more than a year of COVID-19.
The vendors certainly need the business after the pandemic stifled sales in 2020. Customers will no doubt welcome spending time with others outside of the house. And without concerts, the music also represents a return to normalcy.
The opening market begins 4 p.m. Friday at 36 East Canal St. in downtown Newark, rain or shine. The first day will include about 40 vendors selling early-season produce, baked goods, cottage foods, and arts and crafts. Many fruits and vegetables will not be available until later in the year.
