The cumulative total number of COVID-19 cases in Calhoun County has surpassed 10,000. During the past week, the county health department reported 466 new cases of the virus, bringing the cumulative total number of people who have gotten sick to 10,068 as of April 7.  Of those people, 232 have died, with four new deaths reported in the last week.  More than 100 new cases have been confirmed since April 5, which is cause for concern, according to health officials, as a surge in cases results in a surge of hospitalizations.  Local hospital systems have seen a substantial increase in the number of people hospitalized with the virus since February when the county hit its 2021 low of 8 hospitalizations.
