MARCELLUS TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) Cass County authorities are investigating a shooting that involved a father and son during an argument that escalated Wednesday evening.
Deputies were called to the 11000 block of Van Buren St. in Marcellus Township at around 9:30. They say a fight between 55-year-old Russell Gonder and his son, 29-year-old Cody Gonder, broke out after they had been drinking alcohol.
Cody was armed with a gun at the time and his father tried to take the weapon away during the fight. After the gun was thrown off to the side, Cody reportedly came back to assault his father again. Deputies say Russell grabbed the gun and shot his son in the head. Cody was taken to a hospital in Kalamazoo and was last listed in critical condition. Russell was treated at an area hospital for injuries sustained in the fight.

The shooting of a Marcellus man in the head by his father is under investigation by the Cass County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies were called after 55-year-old Russell and 29-year-old Cody Gonder got into a fight after drinking, with Cody drinking excessively. Russel was able to disarm his son and throw his weapon to the side, but Cody resumed the assault on his dad. At that point, Russell grabbed the gun and shot his son in the head. Cody is in critical condition at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo, while Russell was treated and released from Ascension Borgess Lee Memorial Hospital. No arrests have been made and the Cass County Prosecutor’s Office will be reviewing the case.
