Approximately 800 Department of Defense employees and members of the military community who received COVID-19 vaccines at Fort George G. Meade on two days this month will likely need to get a third dose after officials discovered some Moderna vaccine vials were improperly stored.
Eighty vials of the vaccine were stored outside of the temperature range recommended by Moderna, which affects the viability, according to a statement released Thursday from Kimbrough Ambulatory Center, the main medical facility at Fort Meade. The doses were administrated on April 7 and April 12.

Officials said there is no risk for potential harm for the hundreds of COVID-19vaccine recipients who received a potentially compromised dose after 80 vials were improperly handed outside of the manufacturer’s recommended temperature range. The error, which was discovered at Kimbrough Ambulatory Care Center (KACC) at Fort Meade, Maryland, impacts approximately 800 doses that were distributed on two different dates earlier this month. Moderna and the Immunization Health Branch of the Defense Health Agency have reviewed the circumstances and have determined that there is no risk for potential harm to the individuals who received the affected doses, a news release posted by the Department of the Army, on Thursday, said. At Fort Meade, 800 doses of Moderna s COVID-19 vaccine were improperly handled, according to Pentagon officials.
Moderna and the Defense Health Agency conducted a review and determined the doses nevertheless pose no risk to those at Fort Meade who received them. However, everyone who received one of the affected shots is being offered a repeat dose, since it s unclear if the vaccines will offer the expected protection if handled outside their recommended temperature range.
The 80 vials of vaccines were administered on April 7 and 12 at the McGill Training Center.
Once the issue was discovered, Kimbrough Ambulatory Care Center staff began contacting affected individuals.
Roughly 80 vials of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine were “improperly handled” outside their recommended temperature range at Fort Meade in Maryland, compromising about 800 doses, the Army said.
The discovery was made last Monday by Kimbrough Ambulatory Care Center. The affected doses were administered on April 7 and April 12 at Fort Meade’s McGill Training Center.
The Army said in a statement that there is “no risk for potential harm” for those who got the compromised shots, but that it’s uncertain whether those doses will offer the protection they’re expected to, so those who got the shots are being offered a repeat dose.
