Christmas in July never looked so real.
A hailstorm in the Southern Tier covered Interstate 86 with slush and shut down part of the expressway on Friday afternoon.
Heavy hail and slick conditions were to blame for a three-vehicle crash involving a tractor-trailer on I-86 in Cuba, Allegany County, according to the Cuba Fire Department.
Cuba is less than 20 miles north of the Pennsylvania border.
The collision occurred in the eastbound lanes and the tractor-trailer settled in the median. Everyone riding in the the other two vehicles suffered minor injuries.
The hail mimicked wet snow conditions on the highway, which temporarily closed due to thick slush accumulation, the fire department said.

Last weekend was not a safe time to be on Albuquerque’s interstates, with two wrong-way drivers causing two fatal crashes within 24 hours. But then, it’s rarely a safe time to be on N.M. roads.
A car headed the wrong way on Interstate 40 early Sunday struck an SUV and then smashed into a tractor-trailer near San Mateo, killing the wrong-way driver. Another wrong-way driver caused a head-on crash on I-25 early Saturday that left two people dead. Deputies said an off-duty Cuba Police Department officer was driving north on southbound I-25 when his car ran into an SUV, killing two men in the SUV and seriously injuring its driver.
