The mayor of Grande Prairie says the provincial government s plan to transition Grande Prairie Regional College into a polytechnic institution will benefit the greater community. We re very excited to see the continued growth and the positive impact that this is sure to have in our community in the decades ahead, Jackie Clayton said in an interview Friday. Generally, we re very excited because of the fact that this is a great opportunity to train and retain talent in our region and into our community from across many different industries and sectors it s fantastic.

On May 11, Grande Prairie Regional College took its first steps on a journey to become an institution geared to serve the local economy in many different ways.

Grande Prairie Regional College will embark on a journey to polytechnic school status, not the university path laid out by the previous NDP government.
“I am pleased to say that this decision was made in collaboration with college and student leaders, and through extensive feedback, it gives me great pleasure to announce that GPRC will become a polytechnic institution,” Minister of Advanced Education Demetrios Nicolaides said.
Expanding higher learning in northwestern Alberta
Grande Prairie Regional College will become Alberta’s newest polytechnic, providing residents of the Peace Region access to a broader range of learning and employment opportunities.

This new designation will support the development of a highly skilled and competitive workforce. Polytechnic status enables Grande Prairie Regional College to create programming that will better support students, businesses and local industry – including apprenticeship education, certificate and diploma programs and high-quality degrees.
