A Regional Security System (RSS) aircraft touched down at Grantley Adams International Airport Tuesday evening bearing an historic gift of 100,000 doses of the Oxford AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine for Barbados.
An excited Prime Minister Mia Mottley was on hand with other members of her Cabinet to welcome the vaccines courtesy the government of India and which, Mottley revealed, will be administered to 50,000 Barbadians starting with frontline workers before this weekend.
The Prime Minister told a virtual press briefing that her Government expects to buy another 100,000 doses of the vaccine from India.
She said: “These are parts of the first batch of a potential 200,000 doses for Barbados. We are asking and hoping that we could purchase the remaining 100,000 doses from the government and people of India. We are still in the negotiations for that second batch, but we really want at this stage to say thank you to the people and government of India.”

Taxi operators are on board with the move by Government to assist them financially over the two-week national pause.
During a press conference on Thursday evening, Minister of Small Business and Entrepreneurship Kerrie Symmonds said shops would be provided with $750 and vendors $250 per week over the period, beginning next Wednesday. He added assistance would extend to beauty salons, barbers, nail technicians, water sports and taxi operators.
Symmonds did not specify the amount of funds that would be paid out, and yesterday he said no decision had been made as yet on how much would be offered to taxi operators.
ERT rules against dismissed senior bank employee

A former senior employee of a local commercial bank, who was caught at Grantley Adams International Airport with some $22,000 in United States foreign currency, has lost her claim for unfair dismissal from the financial institution.
The ruling was handed down today by the Employment Rights Tribunal (ERT) Chairman, retired High Court Justice Christopher Blackman in the unfair dismissal case brought by ex-sales supervisor Sonya Toppin against her former employer Republic Bank (Barbados) Limited.
Justice Blackman said the decision to throw out Toppin’s claim was based in part on her admission that she was about to fly to the United States with about US$20,000 in foreign currency for which she was not granted legal permission to carry, an act that constituted gross misconduct.
