Australia's south-east has endured a wild night of winter weather with high winds, heavy rain, flooding and widespread snow, with emergency services run off their feet in Victoria.
A man s body has been discovered in floodwaters in Victoria amid one of the worst storms to hit the state in decades - as a quarter of a million homes remain without power.

Subscriber only Freezing winter storms were forecast as the state braced for low temperatures, rain, destructive winds and the likelihood of snow on high peaks. Temperatures up to 8C below the June average were predicted for overnight Wednesday in the midst of the cold snap, with the lowest figures expected around the Granite Belt region. The record-breaking chill predicted a dusting of snow for parts of the Gold Coast and Tweed, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

There won t be quite the chill factor but it s certainly below average and it will feel like a winter s day, absolutely, he said. It s going to stay below average for quite a few days, I d say until next week. Although daytime temperatures through the weekend were expected to warm up, Mr Regano said Coast residents would still reach for their Ugg boots and dressing gowns. It s still going to feel wintry the whole time, the nights will be very cold, so they re going to be in single digits for quite a few days, he said.
