Some of the winning bids in the RDOF rural broadband funding auction were for unrealistically low levels of support and the net result could be that those areas do not get service, according to two of the rural electric cooperatives that bid in the auction.
The cooperatives discussed their concerns on a virtual press conference organized by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) today, where NRECA urged the FCC to closely scrutinize the long-form applications submitted by auction winners.

Many unserved areas of rural Tennessee are slated to receive a major upgrade in broadband internet service. This week Charter Communications (Spectrum) announced it will invest $92.9 million to expand service to more than 79,000 locations in the Volunteer State.
Senators Mike Bell, Todd Gardenhire and State Representative Dan Howell have announced that $7.25 million will be used to expand broadband access in Bradley, Meigs and Polk Counties. The three lawmakers have been at the forefront of efforts increase connectivity to rural Tennessee for a number of years. While they have seen some success “the announcement by Charter is somewhat of a game changer” Howell said.

SpaceX said in a filing on Thursday that Starlink had more than 10,000 users in the US and abroad.
Elon Musk’s aerospace company launched the Starlink public beta in October.
In the filing, SpaceX requested that it be made eligible for federal cash to expand Starlink.
SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service has amassed more than 10,000 users across the world just four months after entering beta, Elon Musk’s aerospace company said in a filing on Thursday.
SpaceX said in a petition to the Federal Communications Commission that “over 10,000 users in the United States and abroad are using the service today.”

Elon Musk’s Starlink internet service, which aims to provide high-speed satellite internet to the entire globe, has over 10,000 users despite only being in its beta testing phase, Business Insider reported.
Starlink is a division of Musk’s multi-billion dollar aerospace company SpaceX, which asked in petition to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Thursday that the company be designated an “Eligible Telecommunications Carrier.”

If successful, SpaceX would be eligible for funding from the U.S. government, including hundreds of millions of dollars in subsidies it won in December.
