A NEWLY-RENOVATED village hall which was formerly a mine shop will be officially opened today. Carrshield Village Hall will be opened by Lord Wentworth Allendale, who gifted the building to the village in 2017. The event is also a thank you celebration to all those who helped in securing the grants for renovations and those who carried out the work. The Grade II listed former Barney Craig mine shop served as an essential facility for workers at a former lead mine from the 1820s onwards, housing miners between shifts and was a base for blacksmiths and other workshops. A phased refurbishment project got under way in 2018 to prevent further deterioration to a building which had been placed on Historic England’s heritage at risk register.
