University research chairs ruling enforces equity targets
This decision follows a complaint filed in 2016 by University of Ottawa Law Professor Amir Attaran.
It brings to an end a legal saga that began two decades ago when eight female professors filed a complaint alleging that the federally funded programme discriminated against women and the three other groups identified by the Canadian Employment Equity Act.
According to Attaran, the issue is: “Is the federal government subsidising discrimination or subsidising equity? From the inception of the Canada Research Chairs (CRC) Program, the federal government has preferred to subsidise discrimination. They have been aware for decades that chairs were being disproportionately allocated to white men.”
