South Carolina proviso could cut funding from schools based on number of virtual students

South Carolina proviso could cut funding from schools based on number of virtual students Ariel Gilreath, Greenville News South Carolina schools could see a drop in state funding next year if districts allow too many students to opt for virtual classes in the fall. A proviso in the Senate s version of the state budget would cut funding for school districts with more than 5% of students in virtual programs. For every student past the 5% threshold, schools could see the amount of money they get per student cut nearly in half. The proviso was added to an initial version of the budget days after state legislators required all public schools in South Carolina to offer full, five-days-a-week instruction in an effort to get students back in classrooms after many spent the past year doing virtual and hybrid instruction.

Greenville County Schools proposes pay increases in new budget

View Comments First-year teachers and some hourly employees in Greenville County Schools could see more pay increases next year if the district passes its proposed budget. The new budget items would increase the starting salary for entry-level teachers who work four extra days from just under $41,000 to $41,500, as well as raising the minimum hourly pay to $12.93. The lowest hourly pay rate in the district is currently $10.26. The budget proposal would also move hourly workers to a weekly pay cycle instead of every two weeks. Bus drivers would also receive an additional $10 for every day they drive without causing a wreck, which is up from the current $5 bonus. Nurses would get paid more to work an additional five days in the year.
