Students at Greensburg Salem Middle School will receive remote instruction at least until Thursday following a recent spike in covid-19 cases.
Superintendent Gary Peiffer said the decision was made after five positive cases were reported late last week.
“We already had 49 students quarantining at the middle school who were close contacts of positive cases,” Peiffer said Monday. “With those numbers, the decision was made to go all remote for today and tomorrow.”
He said deep cleaning began Friday in areas where the five affected students had been and was expanded to the rest of the school.

The YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh has permanently closed Camp T. Frank Soles in Middlecreek, Somerset County.
The 263-acre camp was a destination for kids, families and school groups for generations.
The YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh was unable to sustain the camp because of the coronavirus pandemic, according to Carolyn Grady, chief development officer.
“Camp T. Frank Soles operated over the summer with pandemic restrictions but was never able to regain the level of program participation that would make it financially viable,” she said in a statement. “We made the difficult decision to end programs at Camp Soles in October and listed the building for sale.”
Two Greensburg Salem School District buildings will be closed through Feb. 18 because of “the number of faculty, staff and students who were in close contact with a positive covid case,” according to district officials.
