Fury as long-awaited UK environment bill is delayed for the third time

Last modified on Tue 26 Jan 2021 07.42 EST The government has delayed the long-awaited environment bill, which redraws rules after the UK’s departure from the EU, provoking fury from campaigners who said it would harm action on air pollution and water quality, as well as other key issues. The proposed legislation would be the biggest shake-up of green regulation in decades. Ministers said the delay, which means the flagship bill is unlikely to pass before the autumn, was necessary because dealing with the Covid-19 crisis left too little parliamentary time for debate. Trying to continue with the original timetable would have risked the bill falling and having to return to square one of the parliamentary process.

90 Eiffel Towers worth of plastic is being sold in UK supermarkets

Plastic equivalent to the weight of almost 90 Eiffel Towers is being sold by British supermarkets. This represents a plastic footprint which has grown significantly since 2017, according to a new report by two environmental charities. In its third annual Checking Out On Plastics report, Greenpeace UK and the Environmental Investigation Agency found that the 10 leading supermarkets collectively put almost 900,000 tonnes of plastic packaging through the tills in 2019. It also found that 2.5 billion plastic water bottles were sold or given away. While 2019 saw a dip of 1.6 per cent in plastic waste from the previous year, overall waste levels increased by 1.2 per cent from 2017’s figure.
