Skanska to keep £4m furlough cash after paying £32m dividend

Skanska UK has confirmed it will not return more than £4m of cash claimed for furloughed workers, despite paying its parent company £32m to reward private investors. Its recently published accounts for the year to 31 December 2020 revealed the firm claimed just over £4m from the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, which pays up to 80 per cent of the salary of furloughed staff. The firm also paid £35m in dividends to its UK parent holding company off the back of its 2019 and 2020 results, when the company reported post-tax profit of £10.2m and £20.4m respectively. Of this, £32m was paid on to the ultimate parent company in Sweden, which paid out SEK3.92bn (£330m) in dividends to private investors.

Cementation Skanska lands £93m HS2 Euston job Skanska’s HS2 Euston site Cementation Skanska has been awarded a £93m contract to construct a 1 km-long open-cut retaining box for HS2. The section will house the tunnels coming into Euston station for the new line. More than 800 piles will be installed for the box section. In addition, around 700 piles will be installed for two new bridges – Hampstead Road Bridge and Granby Terrace Bridge – that will run over the new line. A further 524 piles will be installed for other works around the Euston area. Cementation was awarded the contract by the Skanska/Costain/Strabag joint venture, which is delivering the £1.8bn S1 and S2 sections that run from HS2’s Euston station up to the M25.
