APPLETON - A jury has started to discuss the fate of a Neenah teenager who contends he was mentally ill when he fatally shot both of his grandparents more than two years ago.
Alex Kraus, 19, pleaded guilty last year to two counts of first-degree intentional homicide, but hopes to convince a jury he was suffering from a mental illness at the time and wasn t able to appreciate what he did was wrong.
The jury, which began to deliberate late Wednesday afternoon, was asked to answer two questions: first, whether Kraus had a mental illness at the time and, second, whether that mental illness made him unable to understand his actions were wrong.
