The 29 percent pension cut they suffered three and a half years ago is being restored as part of President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan designed to pull the nation’s economy out of the economic mess created by the COVID-19 pandemic. The massive Rescue Plan contains $82 billion to help shore up pensions in general.

CMH picket sends strong message

Members of 1199 Service Employees International Union, United Healthcare Workers East, participated in the picket. The picket was held to call attention to the labor-management disagreement over salary raises and health care costs that have stalled negotiations during the pandemic. The picket took place in two shifts from 2:30-4:30 p.m. and another from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Mayor Kamal Johnson, Common Council President Thomas DePietro, Mayoral Aide and 3rd Ward Supervisor Michael Chameides, 2nd Ward Alderwoman and Common Council Majority Leader Tiffany Garriga and 4th Ward Supervisor Linda Mussmann were among those in attendance at the first picket. As many as 70 picketers gathered as the earlier picket progressed, standing and marching on Columbia Street in 20-degree temperatures. Cars and emergency vehicles driving by showed support by honking.
