Washington Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of 76-year-old Bishop Michael Sheridan of Colorado Springs,Colorado, and has named as his successor Fr. James Golka, vicar general of the Diocese of Grand Island, Nebraska.
The changes in the Colorado diocese were announced April 30 in Washington by Archbishop Christophe Pierre, the apostolic nuncio.

“In the early 1980s, a KGB agent who enjoyed diplomatic cover as the Deputy Chief of Mission to the United Nations for the Soviet Union approached McCarrick, apparently to attempt to befriend him,” said the report, released by the Vatican Nov. 10. “McCarrick, who was initially unaware that the diplomat was also a KGB agent, was contacted by agents of the FBI, who asked him to serve as a counterintelligence asset with respect to the activities of the KGB.”

COLORADO SPRINGS â On Friday, Pope Francis appointed Father James R. Golka as Bishop-elect of Colorado Springs. This comes after the Pope accepted the resignation of Bishop Michael J. Sheridan, 76, from the diocese. Sheridan served as bishop in Colorado Springs since 2003. Bishops are required to resign when they reach age 75.
During a press conference, Golka said he has no current agenda for the diocese of Colorado Springs but will discern to the best of his ability what God s mission is for the diocese.
