Regional groups ask feds to renew Falcon Pipeline scrutiny

Residents and environmental advocates are demanding more transparency from federal regulators tasked with investigating Shell Pipeline Co. s Falcon Pipeline.  The People Over Petro Coalition on Tuesday held a virtual meeting urging the federal Pipeline Hazardous Materials Safety Administration to hold a formal public hearing related to its ongoing oversight of the Falcon pipeline. Representatives from PHMSA, a U.S. Department of Transportation agency, said they would relay the request to PHMSA’s public affairs division.  “We deserve to know our government, on all levels, is working to keep us safe after they permitted this pipeline to come into our region,” said Heaven Sensky with the Center for Coalfield Justice during Tuesday’s meeting.

Former Center Twp tax collector pleads guilty

CENTER TWP. – A former township tax collector pleaded guilty in federal court Thursday to wire fraud and filing false tax returns. Jeanne Bowser, 62, of Center Township, admitted to stealing more than $1 million in tax payments from Center Township and the Central Valley School District between 2011 and 2019.  She embezzled the funds by writing herself checks from a bank account used for tax deposits and stealing cash tax payments.  Bowser, who resigned two years ago after a routine district audit uncovered financial irregularities, underreported her income on taxes and filed misleading financial reports to conceal the theft.  Her sentencing is tentatively scheduled for Sept. 28; she faces up to 23 years in prison and/or a $500,000 fine. The actual sentence imposed, however, could vary.

Aliquippa secures funding to replace lead service lines

Aliquippa secures funding to replace lead service lines The Municipal Water Authority of Aliquippa will receive more than $2 million in state grant funding to replace the city’s lead service lines.  Gov. Tom Wolf on Wednesday announced $117 million had been released for 25 drinking water, wastewater and nonpoint source projects statewide through Pennsylvania’s Infrastructure Investment Authority. The only Beaver County project to receive funding was Aliquippa, which will replace 184 existing lead water service lines with copper lines – eliminating the threat of corroded lines seeping lead into the water supply. Following months of customer complaints, Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection ordered the authority to improve its testing for drinking water contaminants.
