The state is investigating a big spike in reports of Legionnaire s disease in the first half of July, including dozens of confirmed cases in metro Detroit, the health department announced Monday.
There have been 107 cases of Legionnaires disease reported in 25 counties between July 1 and July 14, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. While increases in cases are often related to environmental factors, including heat and rainfall, this represents a 569% increase from referrals from the same period in 2020 (16 cases) and a 161% increase from referrals from the same period in 2019 (41 cases), according to a news release.
There are 19 confirmed cases in Wayne County, 17 cases each in Oakland County and the city of Detroit, and 15 cases in Macomb County.
