OGDEN, Utah – Laws banning price gouging aim to prevent exorbitant prices and increase access to critical goods during states of emergency, but newly published research from Weber State University’s Goddard School of Business & Economics suggests that these laws likely cause shortages, undermining some of their own goals.
Published online early this week in the
Journal of Private Enterprise, the research draws on publicly available internet search data from Google Trends. Titled “Anti-Gouging Laws, Shortages, and COVID-19: Insights From Consumer Searches,” the peer-reviewed article is co-authored by Gavin Roberts, assistant professor of economics at Weber State, and Rik Chakraborti, assistant professor of economics at Christopher Newport University in Virginia.
Peninsula city managers and county administrators signed a letter Monday saying that they were planning several COVID-19 vaccination sites for the Peninsula and hoped to get state approval this week.
“The Poets&Quants ranking is particularly important because they have the largest team of journalists covering business schools,” said Michael Weber, dean of FSC’s business school. “Our ranking in P&Q is a validation of our program quality by industry experts, and it facilitates awareness of FSC with a very large audience. Even more remarkable, the P&Q 2021 Report Card specifically notes that Florida Southern scored higher than all other universities and colleges including Wake Forest and Southern Methodist as rated by alumni, in the ‘Quality of Teaching in Business Courses’ category.”
