From staff reports
HAMMONDSVILLE The Edison Local School District is looking to reduce chronic absenteeism and is seeing some positive results with the addition of a new truancy officer.
School board members approved the hiring of Anthony Pierro during the Feb. 25 regular meeting, but his contract is retroactive to Feb. 1. Superintendent Bill Beattie said Pierro’s presence already has yielded improvements among student attendance and leaders want to maintain the momentum.
“We’ve been monitoring our chronic absenteeism since the beginning of October and there’s so much responsibility on the principals, guidance counselors and SRO’s, so the board made a commitment to hire someone to handle absenteeism in the district,” Beattie said.

Waking Up White Book Study - Racial Equity
This guided ‘book club’ is a 10 week study of Debby Irving’s book Waking Up White and Finding Myself in the Story of Race. The book has been described as a brutally honest, unflinching exploration of race and personal identity, told with heart by a truly gifted storyteller. Learning how to interrupt racism is part of learning how to be an ally for racial equity. Participants will read the book together and reflect on its message while growing personally and in community with others. The group will be led by three members of Light of Christ United Methodist Church in Ballantyne and will meet online, via Zoom. Meetings will be on Friday Mornings from 7:45am until 8:45am, beginning April 16 and ending June 18.
