School consolidation plans presented to public

Christian County Public Schools has started preparing the public for a potential vote by the school board that could result in the consolidation of Hopkinsville and Christian County high schools. The first of three public forums was held on Monday at the Christian County Middle School Performing Arts Center. Subsequent forums are scheduled for Aug. 2 at Crofton Elementary School and Aug. 12 at South Christian Elementary School. Both events will start at 6 p.m. and be held in the respective school gyms. Superintendent Chris Bentzel and other Christian County central office administrators laid out the history of the facilities that has led to this moment where it looks like consolidation is the best option. Bentzel said that both high school buildings are old and in need of replacement or major renovations.

Bentzel also reiterated there will be no nickel tax or raising taxes to go toward the $100 million construction facility because the district can self-fund this project by using a grant, Cares Act/ESSER funding, and a substantial increase in the district’s bonding capacity. click to download audioAccording to Bentzel, the location is still to be determined and they are looking at sites right now.
