Christian Fiscal Court meets in person for the first time this year

Christian County Fiscal Court met in person Tuesday morning for the first time since the county was considered to be in the COVID-19 positivity red zone. The court met with members socially distanced from each other, wearing masks and with a limit of 50 people allowed inside in its chambers as magistrates considered several items on the court’s agenda. The first item of official business the court considered was the purchase of a parcel of land located behind the Christian County Sheriff’s Public Safety Building. Christian County Attorney John Soyars explained where the property was and the purpose of purchasing it.

Sheriff explains CARES Act relief funding, what it is used for

After the COVID-19 pandemic led to businesses closing to the public early last year, the Kentucky state government began providing COVID relief funding in the form of reimbursements through the CARES Act. Locally, Christian County Fiscal Court received around $3.2 million through the CARES Act for county reimbursements after the city was forced to spend extra funding due to the ongoing pandemic. Of that $3.2 million, the Christian County Sheriff’s Office received a majority of that relief funding. Specifically, CCSO was given $2,191,025.45 in reimbursements from the Fiscal Court between March, 2019 and now, according to County Treasurer Walter Cummings. Following the relief funds being disbursed, a misconception began floating around that because CCSO received roughly $2 million from the Fiscal Court, that freed up the Sheriff’s Office’s budget money to be spent elsewhere.

Christian County Magistrates Approve Resolution To Apply For Utility Assistance

The resolution was approved unanimously by magistrates, and if the first round of funding is depleted, the county may be able to get another round of $200,000. Magistrates also approved the appointment of Matthew Baker to the Hopkinsville-Christian County Airport Board. Baker will take over the seat for Tony Jones, who asked to leave the board at the beginning of the month. Kenneth Bates was also re-appointed to the board after a one-year term. Both will serve on the board through December 31, 2024. The next Christian County Fiscal Court meeting will be Tuesday morning, February 23, at 8:30.
