Freight train in Clackamas County derails after hitting tree on tracks

OREGON CITY A Union Pacific train carrying lumber derailed after hitting a large tree that had fallen on the tracks along Highway 99 between Canby and Oregon City, authorities said.
The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office said three locomotives and 15 rail cars derailed at around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The engineer of the train complained of pain, KGW-TV reported. No one else was injured.
None of the debris or rail cars blocked the highway, which was temporarily fully closed, KGW-TV reported.
The Oregon Department of Transportation said one southbound lane of Highway 99 near South End Road would remain closed for up to two days.

According to KGW-TV 8, the local NBC affiliate, a Union Pacific freight train derailed between Canby, Ore. and Oregon City (about 25 miles southeast of Portland) yesterday morning. The train ran into a tree that had fallen across the tracks. The National Transporation Safety Board and the UP police are investigating the accident.
The UP line in this area runs parallel to Oregon’s Highway 99. The Oregon Department of Transportation announced the closure of one southbound lane on the Highway, and expects it to remain closed for the next 24 hours.

A landslide has closed the Old Columbia River Gorge Highway between Wahkeena Falls and Angel Rest (Bridal Veil to Multnomah Falls) as of late Tuesday morning.
The Oregon Department of transportation said the closure will be in place for an extended period so geologists can assess the situation and determine what mitigation efforts can be used. The highway will then need to be cleared of debris.

A train derailed from its tracks along Oregon 99E and the Willamette River early Wednesday in Clackamas County, authorities say.
The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office said it appears 15 train cars went off their tracks in the incident, which happened in the community of New Era between Canby and Oregon City. No hazardous materials were affected, according to the agency.
An engineer complained of pain, deputies said, but no serious injuries were reported.
Authorities initially responded to the derailment at 1:30 a.m. Oregon 99E was closed between Canby and Oregon City until about 3 a.m.
