Health officials urge tick awareness heading into summer

Apr 14, 2021 Longer days and warmer weather means more time outside in the North Country and not just for humans. Ticks are back and local health authorities are advising two-legged residents to be aware of potentially serious health risks. The Clinton County Health Department said in a written statement that it logged 163 cases of Lyme Disease in 2020, more than double the 63 cases recorded in 2019.  The illness is caused by a bacteria found in deer ticks and spread to humans via tick bite. The insects are small, roughly the size of a sesame seed when full grown. Immature ticks are even smaller and can still spread disease.

SUNY Plattsburgh to vaccinate students as they become eligible on Tuesday

As all New Yorkers 16 and older will be eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine on Tuesday, SUNY Plattsburgh will begin to vaccinate students first thing in the morning. The clinic will begin at 9 a.m. in the gymnasium at Memorial Hall on campus, where students will receive the first dose of the Moderna vaccine. I think this gives us hope for normalcy as more people have access to the vaccines. I think it ll be really popular on campus because it seems a lot of people are vaccinated and want to get vaccinated, said Ryley Duffy, junior at SUNY Plattsburgh. Report: Clinton Co. drug OD deaths for 2020 23; up 7 from prior year By Gary Huffenberger - ghuffenberger@wnewsj.com WILMINGTON Drug overdoses were the third leading cause of death during 2020 in Clinton County, with 23 substance-use deaths, according to a draft of the Clinton County Health District (CCHD) annual report. Along with ranking high on the 2020 list, local drug overdoses last year increased by seven from 2019. Finishing at the top of the list of 2020 leading causes of death are, in order, cardiovascular [heart] disease (72 deaths), and cancer (49 deaths). Note that these numbers represent deaths that occurred within Clinton County only, and residents may have died from those causes while in another county.
