When Maria Torres and her sister-in-law got an emergency notification on the Nextdoor app Sunday night, they had to do a double-take. It said a tiger was on the loose in a nearby Houston neighborhood.
Instead of staying in the house with their doors locked, the two women went on an impromptu safari.

TIGER ABANDONED IN HOUSTON HOME
In 2019, an anonymous tipster reported finding a 400-pound tiger in an abandoned Houston home. The animal was removed from the home and later a woman was charged with cruelty to non-livestock animals. Investigators said the 400-pound male tiger was found by a woman who waited nearly a week before she called 311 to report the animal. In the call, the woman said she had gone to the house because she met a man who said he needed to go to a house and feed his tiger. She said the animal was being kept in a small cage. Authorities seized the tiger and it has since been relocated to the Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch in Murchinson. We got in the car and went to check it out, Torres told ABC News on Monday. When they reached Ivy Wall Drive in west Houston, they could barely believe their eyes. Torres took out her cell phone and started recording several people confronting a striped Bengal tiger, including an off-duty law enforcement officer backpedaling with his gun aimed at the big cat.

House Bill 3710 is going on and was heard by the House Culture, Recreation and Tourism Committee. It’s a touching bill, as in whether people should be allowed to touch wild animals at attractions and facilities.
On one side are animal protection advocates, concerned about humane treatment of animals, and public safety advocates. On the other side are Texans who own businesses that depend on people paying to interact directly with animals.
What would HB 3710 do?
HB 3710 states, “A person may not allow a member of the public to have direct contact with an animal” listed in the bill, which defines “direct contact” as “allowing a member of the public to be in close proximity to an animal in an area without a permanent physical barrier preventing contact between the person and the barrier.”
