CLEVELAND Around the corner from my childhood home, Anjenette Whitted is changing the way my community helps one another. We face a lot of challenges, she explained. We face a lot of things that other communities don t.
Whitted saw that her neighbors in Glenville were struggling. The neighborhood is a food desert with only one grocery store nearby. So, she decided to take action to help others easily access food.

Man charged in slaying of 17-year-old girl in Cleveland park

CLEVELAND, Ohio A Columbus man is charged the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old girl at Martin Luther King Jr. Park in Cleveland’s Glenville neighborhood.
Esperanza Lugo, 18, is charged with aggravated murder in the April 8 shooting of Hershawna Rias. He remains jailed on $100,000 bond after his first court appearance Tuesday in Cleveland Municipal Court.
Rias was a habitual runaway spent time in foster care, including at the time of her death, according to police reports. She was reported missing more than 10 times in the last three years, sometimes for more than a month at a time, police reports say.

But Freedman notes, the root causes are complex. Through policy, we segregated how people live in our country and that segregation not only influences who s living where, but also what are the resources available in that space, Freedman said.
But food deserts aren’t only in predominantly Black and Hispanic neighborhoods. A lack of access to food can be found all over Northeast Ohio in places like Akron, Lorain, Elyria, and even parts of Ashtabula.
