Jury deliberating case against man who allegedly sold fatal drugs

NEW PHILADELAPHIA A jury has acquitted a 35-year-old city man of charges that he supplied drugs that resulted in a fatal overdose. The jury found John A. Arnder not guilty of two counts of corrupting another with drugs on Wednesday afternoon. They convicted him of two counts of aggravated drug trafficking. Prosecution and defense attorneys made their closing arguments Wednesday. Arnder had been accused of supplying Johnathan D. Brinkman with the synthetic opioids fentanyl and carfentanil on June 20, 2019. Brinkman, 23, of New Philadelphia, died the same day.  The victim s father found him unconscious in a bedroom at their home in the 300 block of Fourth Street NW, according to New Philadelphia Police Detective Capt. Shawn Nelson, who testified Wednesday. Brinkman was taken to Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital in Dover, where he was pronounced dead. 

Civic leader, educator John Zion dies at age 92

The New Philadelphia resident died Monday, March 8, in Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital in  Dover. Retired Tuscarawas County Court of Common Pleas Judge Roger Lile had Zion as his English teacher his sophomore year. “He’d also talk about history, so he provided a good foundation for when I went to college,” said Lile, who now resides in Dover. “He was always fun to be around and just a pleasant, easy-going person,” Lile said. “I think that he really lived a long time because he didn’t get excited and upset about something he couldn’t take care of doing. He was great as one of our three county commissioners we worked with during the annual budget process, and later the renovations to the courthouse. It really made much nicer conditions for the jury. My courtroom had been the law library for years before being converted into Courtroom No. 2.”

United Way campaign tops $600,000

The Times-Reporter The United Way of Tuscarawas County celebrated the conclusion of its 78th annual fundraising campaign with a virtual awards ceremony sponsored by Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital. Bob Alsept, superintendent of Buckeye Career Center and 2020 United Way campaign chair, announced a record breaking campaign total of $604,439.98. “This is an amazing total. As a person who was born in Tuscarawas County and has spent most of my life in this area, I am not surprised. I have seen this county pull together time after time. This campaign is no different. The pandemic has created uncertainty and great need,” stated Alsept. “It would have been understandable for the people of our area to hold back and conserve resources, but residents gave more than ever before. They dug deeper to help their neighbor. Included in this total is over $82,000 donated to the Covid-19 Community Response Fund. Two women taken to hospitals after being hit by car in Dover

Two women taken to hospitals after being hit by car in Dover Nancy Molnar DOVER Two 58-year-old women were injured when they were hit by a car while walking to work at a doctors office in the Heritage Square parking lot Tuesday morning. Police  suspected both have serious injuries. A New Philadelphia woman was taken to Cleveland Clinic Akron General hospital by air ambulance. After being hit, she went onto the hood of the car and struck the windshield before being thrown to the pavement, a police report said. A Bolivar woman was taken by ground to Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital, according to police. She was hit and thrown to the ground.

Fleeing suspect rescued from Stillwater Creek ice Tuesday night

DENNISON A wanted 19-year-old Uhrichsville man was rescued from the ice atop Stillwater Creek on Tuesday night after fleeing from police. Deputies got Glenn D.W. Skinner off the ice so emergency medical workers could treat him, according to Tuscarawas County Sheriff Orvis Campbell. Looks like the guys did a great job and could very well have saved Mr. Skinner, Campbell said by email. He credited deputies Chris Edwards, Brian Hale and Dave Digenova with rescuing Skinner, along with K-9 Bruno. Skinner was unresponsive when they found him, according to Edwards initial report of the incident. Deputies removed him from the ice and dragged him to U.S. Route 250. Uhrichsville Fire Department paramedics took him from the road to a hospital for treatment of severe hypothermia.
