None of us could have imagined what we would be facing.  And while the 12 past months have produced numerous stories of perseverance, few exemplify the spirit of selflessness, public service and bravery than the community s first responders, who are the Journal Gazette & Times-Courier Newsmaker of the Year 2020.  This year, the title goes to the legions of doctors, nurses, police officers, paramedics, fire department personnel and medical staff who have fought tirelessly this year to keep us safe. 

Charles N Wheeler III

Charles N. Wheeler III The director of the Public Affairs Reporting (PAR) graduate program is Professor Charles N. Wheeler III,  a veteran newsman who came to the University of Illinois at Springfield following a 24-year career at the Chicago Sun-Times. Wheeler covered state government and politics for the Sun-Times since 1970, when he covered the Sixth Illinois Constitutional Convention. For the last 19 years of his Sun-Times tenure, Wheeler was assigned to the newspaper’s Statehouse bureau. During that time, he was elected to 16 consecutive one-year terms as president of the Illinois Legislative Correspondents Association and served for many years on the PAR program and admissions committees.

Lake Land College Dental Hygiene Program Establishes Transfer Agreement w/Eastern Illinois University Published on December 24 2020 9:15 am Last Updated on December 24 2020 9:23 am Lake Land College Dental Hygiene students will now have the opportunity to transfer seamlessly to Eastern Illinois University. A new agreement will allow students who earn an associate degree in dental hygiene from Lake Land to go on to earn a bachelor’s degree in public health community health at Eastern Illinois University. “I am thrilled that students have this opportunity,” Lake Land College Division Chair Allied Health/Nursing Instructor Erin Swingler said. “This option is just one of the many ways we are demonstrating the mission, vision and values of Lake Land College within our community.”
