STAFF and parents at a primary school took further strike action today over plans to turn a school into an academy. Members of the National Education Union at Peacehaven Heights Primary School formed a picket line outside the school, before protesting outside County Hall in Lewes as the first in-person full council meeting took place since Covid-19 restrictions were lifted. Campaigners are strongly against the school being handed over permanently to the STEP academy trust. Local governing bodies at Peacehaven Heights Primary School and Telscombe Cliffs Primary School were instructed to explore academy conversion in 2019 to raise standards – but following strike action at both schools, they decided against conversion.

After the final ballots had been counted, we sat down with the leaders of the council’s main political parties for their views on how the election played out in East Sussex.
For the Conservative Party the results painted a somewhat mixed picture, remaining in control of the council, but losing ground in some areas of the county.
The party held off challenges in some hotly-contested seats and also gained ground in one area, taking the Bexhill West ward from Independent incumbent Deirdre Earl-Williams.
East Sussex County Council election votes are due to be announced this afternoon
FULL HASTINGS RESULTS: four Conservative holds, three Labour holds and one Green gain.
FULL ROTHER RESULTS: six Conservative holds, one Conservative gain, one Independent hold and one Lib Dem hold.
There were eight Hastings seats up for election and nine across Rother.
In Hastings only one county division changed hands, with Green Julia Hilton taking Old Hastings and Tressell from Labour.
With two Conservatives not standing again, Alan Hay and Sorrell Marlow-Eastwood were elected to County Hall for the first time in Baird & Ore and St Helens & Silverhill respectively.
Hastings Labour retained control of Hastings Borough Council. However, they were left with a reduced majority because of Conservatives gains. The Tories won eight of the 16 seats contested. The Green Party gained one seat in the Old Hastings wards. Crawley In Crawley, no party has overall control. Labour won a narrow victory in 2019, but no party had overall control going in to the election. This was due to the resignation of one councillor and the death of another. The Conservatives have one more seat than Labour with 18. The Tories say they will begin talks to try and form an administration.
