Church looking for those in need of food

Church looking for those in need of food View Comments ZANESVILLE - There has been a decline in customers to the fresh produce giveaway at First Baptist Church in South Zanesville, and organizers urge those in need to take advantage. The next giveaway is Friday, May 28th, starting at 10 a.m. The June giveway will be held on the 25th. We were very busy once the pandemic hit, but over the last couple of months we have noticed the numbers have really decreased, said Jaime Trout, executive director of Eastside Community Ministries, who partners with the church to run the produce giveaway. We are assuming it is because of extra help people have been getting, through food stamps and stimulus.

Bill Briggs always had a heart for the poor

Bill Briggs always had a heart for the poor ZANESVILLE - The 1960s was a time of racial rioting throughout the U.S. and Ohio witnessed its fair share of violence. By 1966, Bill Briggs had been called to serve as director of the Northeast Inner-City Mission in Canton.  From 1967 to 1969 things were pretty bad, Bill s wife, Dottie, said. The mayor at the time, Stanley Cmich had recruited Lee Anderson - a black man - to create activities to deter racial rioting in Canton. Bill was part of that effort called Operation Positive. They provided a youth recreation program and training program for low-income adults. As a consequence, Canton was spared the riots that were happening at that time.
