ALOR SETAR, May 11 A total of 305 ferry passengers on the way to Langkawi from Kuala Kedah faced anxious moments when the vessel’s engine room caught fire at 4pm today.
Marine Department in a statement today said the engine room caught fire immediately after it departed the Kuala Kedah passengers’ ferry terminal here.
“The Kuala Kedah Volunteer Fire Brigade machinery, which reached the scene early had helped put out the fire before another squad from the Kedah Fire and Rescue Department arrived.
“The fire was brought under control at 4.40pm and monitoring was carried out until 5.30pm,” he said.
ALOR SETAR (Bernama): A three-year-old girl was found drowned after she was believed to have slipped into a drain near her house in Felda Gunong Bongsu and swept by the current to Sungai Dingin near Kulim, last night.
Kulim police chief Supt Azhar Hashim said the incident occurred at about 7pm during heavy rain while Naera Dellisha Muhammad Nazri was playing with a few other children at the scene.
“The victim’s eight-year-old brother, Muhammad Thaqif, then ran home to inform their father, who went to search for the girl with other family members, ” he said in a statement here today.

SETAR: An ambulance ferrying a Covid-19 patient was involved in an accident with a one-tonne lorry at KM52.6 northbound of the North-South Expressway (PLUS), near the Alor Setar Selatan toll plaza this evening.
Kedah Health director Dr Mohd Fikri Ujang said the ambulance was on its way from Sungai Petani to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (HSB) with the patient and three Ministry of Health staff on board.
“All the four passengers are safe and have been sent to HSB for treatment,” he said when contacted by
Bernama today.
Meanwhile, Kedah Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Mohamadul Ehsan Mohd Zain said the department received an emergency call regarding the incident at 4.20 pm.
