ATLANTA In a game where you had No. 1 offenses, No. 1 defenses, and 5-star talent, it was a senior punter that stole the show Tuesday in the Class 4A state championship game.
Marist’s Charlie Flemming kept Jefferson’s vaunted running game bottled up the entire second half as the War Eagles outscored the Dragons 16-0 in the second half to capture the crown with a 30-14 victory at Georgia State Stadium.
Flemming’s boots kept Jefferson pinned inside the 20 on all five of its second-half drives with starts at the 8, 20, 9, 8 and 20. Factor that in with a War Eagles defense that has been the state’s best in 2020, it was a bad recipe for the Dragons.
JEFFERSON When Jefferson and Marist kickoff on Tuesday, it’ll be the No. 1 offense vs. the No. 1 defense.
It has epic matchup written all over it and what better way to settle who’s the best in Class 4A than in the state title game.
No. 1 Marist and second-ranked Jefferson are set to battle for the top prize in Class 4A on Tuesday at Georgia State Stadium in Atlanta. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. and can be heard live on
“Marist is giving up the fewest points in the state in any classification,” Jefferson coach Gene Cathcart said. “And they score about 40-something points. It’s just really impressive as it should be when you’re in the state championship game. We’ve gotta big task in front of us, but we like to think they’ve got a sizable task in front of them, too.”
JEFFERSON Jefferson is more than just a football team. They’re a family.
Coach Gene Cathcart and his staff have built a program that is more about family, brotherhood, than Xs and Os.
Sure, the Xs and Os are working well – No. 1 offense, No. 10 defense – but the chemistry is the driving force that has them in the Class 4A state title game more so than the play calling.
It’s evident when you take a trip to Memorial Stadium and watch the way practice is conducted by the staff and players.
“You gotta trust the process and have faith in what the coaches are teaching you,” running back Jordan Perry said. “You’ve got to have people that are willing to work with each other.”
JEFFERSON Jefferson coach Gene Cathcart says he s the gym rat of football.
Malaki Starks, the nation s No. 16-ranked athlete according to 247sports.com rankings, proved why he s such a commodity on the national recruiting sites. He s rated as a five-star and has 14 Power 5 offers, including Georgia, Alabama, Auburn, Clemson and Florida State.
He s rushed for more than 1,450 yards and 24 touchdowns. He leads the team on both sides of the ball. He leads the team, period. He s every bit as advertised plus more, Cathcart said. He s constantly learning. You can t help but pull for him.
The junior do-it-all athlete led the Dragons with 320 yards rushing and four touchdowns. He also tossed another score to Spencer Neese and hauled in the game-sealing interception to beat Benedictine in Savannah last Friday. The win pushed the Dragons to the Class 4A state title game on Dec. 29.
