It will be named for the Reist family that has owned the tract for more than 100 years. The new Reist Nature Preserve connects to a 1,000-acre-plus corridor of Susquehanna Riverlands, contiguously protected natural lands that include Susquehannock State Park, State Game Lands 181 and Brookfield Renewable land donated to the Conservancy as part of a large landscape protection effort. It includes an important part of the viewshed across Lake Aldred from popular Conservancy preserves like Tucquan Glen & Pyfer, House Rock, Reed Run and Pinnacle Overlook.

According to the Lancaster Conservancy, the expansion occurred through a land deal with Ralph Streibig, who donated part of the value of the land in memory of his husband, Richard L. King, and King’s family, who loved the land and worked to preserve it for future generations. The nature preserve northeast of York now is nearly 800 contiguous protected acres and more than 1,000 acres total. The conservancy completed the purchase with a Keystone Recreation, Park and Conservation Fund grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

Updated: 12:17 PM EST December 16, 2020 YORK COUNTY, Pa. The Lancaster Conservancy has acquired a 70-acre addition to the Hellam Hills Nature Preserve in York County, the organization said Wednesday. With this acquisition, Hellam Hills Nature Preserve grows to nearly 800 contiguous, protected acres, and the total land exceeding 1,000 acres, the Conservancy said.  The addition was purchased with financial assistance from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Bureau of Recreation and Conservation, who awarded the project a grant from the Keystone Recreation, Park and Conservation Fund, the Conservancy said. Brookfield Renewable donated a 173-acre tract in Lower Chanceford Township along McCalls Ferry Road as the match to DCNR funding, along with private donations, the Conservancy added.
