Few populations in Fort Bend County have been more devastated by the social isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic than those who belong to the 65-and-up demographic, particularly those who are living alone.Â
âScams can happen, falls can happen, and people live in a busy time, especially during COVID-19 when people werenât getting out and visiting with folks,â Michael Kahlenberg said. âWe wanted a program where real people were making real phone calls and talking with them and seeing whatâs going on in their world.â
Kahlenberg is the director of You Are Not Alone (YANA), a local nonprofit organization geared toward providing aid and comfort to seniors who are disabled and/or living alone. Heâs looking for more volunteers to help some of the countyâs most vulnerable residents.Â

Tell us a little about yourself
I have lived in Jacksonville my entire life and graduated from Jacksonville High School in 1995. I attended Illinois College and Lincoln Land Community College and obtained my associate’s degree in law enforcement administration. In March 2002, I graduated from the Illinois State Police Academy in Springfield. I have been married to my husband, Adam, for almost 11 years and we have two amazing children, Myah and Brandon. We have a slew of “bonus” kids 32 to be exact ranging from foreign exchange students, international college students, Springfield Slider baseball players, and soccer coaches from England, as part of our family over the years. We are expecting our 21st foreign exchange student, Margaux, to arrive from Belgium in August.
