Sen. Ted Cruz was one of 147 Republicans who voted to overturn the 2020 election results, which contributed to his failing grade from the Republican Accountability Project. Anti-Trump conservatives say half of congressional GOP failed to protect democracy
During the 2020 election, the strength of American democracy was put to the test several times. While democracy ultimately prevailed, many Republicans in Congress failed to support it.
The Republican Accountability Project, an anti-Trump conservative group, released a report this week analyzing how GOP members acted during crucial moments as the election results were being certified. More than half the Republicans in Congress received failing grades for their actions.
"Unfortunately for both of them, they both actually failed the Democracy test. They both got "Fs" on this report card, Olivia Troye, director of the Republican Accountability Project, told Pittsburgh's Action News 4.

Washington Representatives Dan Newhouse and Jaime Herrera-Beutler have both been under fire within the Republican Party, after joining eight other of their GOP colleagues in the House in voting to impeach then-President Donald Trump. While that may not have scored them points among Republicans, it did earn them high marks in a new “Democracy Report Card” released this last week.
The report card compiled by a group known as the Republican Accountability Project (RAP) graded Republican members of Congress in every state based on four criteria:
GOP Group Is Rating Membersâ Response To Trumpâs Attempts To Overturn Democracy
The GOP Democracy Report Card gives grades to members of Congress based on whether they supported Trumpâs lie about the election being stolen from him.
WASHINGTON â While most conservative groups rate members of Congress on issues like opposing taxes and supporting gun rights, a new one is ranking them on a more fundamental metric: how they treated former President Donald Trumpâs attempt to overturn American democracy.
âItâs a sad sign of the times,â said Olivia Troye, a Trump White House official who has become an outspoken critic, now with the Republican Accountability Project. âItâs a very fundamental thing in our society. If youâre an elected official in our democracy, you should be pro-democracy.â

The Republican Accountability Project, a so-called conservative anti-Trump group championed by figures such as Bill Kristol, has given Republican lawmakers letter grades based on how they purportedly have defended democracy.
The “GOP Democracy Report Card” is part of the group’s efforts to track the level of Republican legislators’ allegiance to former President Donald Trump, Reuters reported. The Republican Accountability Project argues that on Jan. 6, “Our Capitol was attacked by a mob that believed that the 2020 election was being stolen. They were encouraged by the lies and actions of President Trump and many Republican members of Congress.”
