INEC converts 1,374 voting points to PUs in Akwa Ibom On By Chioma Onuegbu, Uyo The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has converted 1,374 voting points in Akwa Ibom State to Polling Units in the expansion of voter access to Polling Units exercise across the country. The Resident Electoral Commissioner,(REC) in the state, Mr. Mike Igini who made this known during the stakeholders meeting held weekend in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, said the new Polling Units(PUs), were added to the existing 2,980 to bring the total number of PUs in the state to 4,354. Igini explained that the expansion of voter access to the Polling Units project in the country has become very important because it gives spice and piquancy to democracy as well as meaning and purpose to the right to vote.

The Commission’s Resident Electoral Commissioner in Lagos State, Sam Olumekun, who announced this at the Election Stakeholders’ forum on Monday, held in Ikeja, explained that the move became necessary to tackle the usual voter apathy and boost voter access to polling units in exercising their fundamental rights to vote. The forum was part of sensitization and public enlightenment of Stakeholders by the commission towards engendering active participation in future election exercises.

Confirming the latest incident, Barrister Festus Okoye, National Commissioner & Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, said in a statement, Monday that, “The Resident Electoral Commissioner for the State, Dr. Joseph Iloh, reported that INEC’s recently renovated office in Ohafia Local Government Area has been set ablaze. Okoye said, “The incident occurred late on Sunday night, 9th May 2021. There are no casualties on the part of our staff on guard duty but the building was virtually destroyed. Apart from furniture items, all electoral materials and office equipment were destroyed.”

This it said was part of efforts to expand voting access during the 2023 general elections in the state. The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of INEC in Ogun, Prof. Abdulganiy Raji, said this in Abeokuta on Monday , at a stakeholders’ meeting on Expansion of Voter Access to Polling Units and Commencement of Continuous Voter Registration in the state Raji explained that when completed, the number of polling units in the state would increase to 5,042.

According to the Commission’s Resident Electoral Commissioner in Lagos State, Sam Olumekun, the newly approved polling units is to provide unhindered access to citizens to exercise their fundamental rights to vote. “Polling Units are central to the electoral process and therefore democracy at large. Voter access to Polling Units is at the very heart of representative democracy because it is where citizens exercise their fundamental rights to vote and make electoral choices freely. Consequently, polling units largely shape citizens confidence in the electoral process and similarly determine the level of their participation or apathy as well as security and safety during elections,” he said.
