COIMBATORE: A security lapse that could blow the lid off an organised racket was reported in the ESI hospital, a designated Covid hospital, on Monday when persons not related to patients were found taking care of them for monetary benefits.

A contract worker of the Government Medical College and ESI Hospital was arrested by the Singanallur police on Tuesday. He allegedly fleeced the family members of some COVID-19 patients by assuring them to arrange special attention for their kin who were under treatment.
The police said B. Balaji (34) from Uppilipalayam, a contract worker who had been working at the hospital for about eight months, was arrested on Tuesday. The action was taken based on a complaint lodged by the hospital’s Resident Medical Officer.
Balaji, who had been working at the section where food for COVID-19 patients was prepared, was accused of cheating the family members of at least five patients.

Cancer crusader and Chairperson of the Cancer Institute (WIA) Chennai Dr V Shanta passed away here on Tuesday. She was 93.
Shanta was undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Chennai.
In his condolence tweet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote, “Dr V Shanta will be remembered for her outstanding efforts to ensure top quality cancer care. The Cancer Institute at Adyar, Chennai, is at the forefront of serving the poor and downtrodden. I recall my visit to the Institute in 2018. Saddened by Dr V Shanta’s demise. Om Shanti.”

Chennai, Jan 19 : Veteran oncologist V. Shanta who headed the Cancer Institute (WIA) here, popularly known as Adyar Cancer Institute died at a private hospital on Tuesday early morning.
A Padma Vibuhshan, Padma Bhushan, Padama Shri and Ramon Magsaysay awardee Shanta, 93 was admitted to a private hospital on Monday night as she was unwell.
Her end came on Tuesday early morning.
Expressing shock at Shanta s death, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami said with her dedicated service she expanded and moderninsed the hospital that was started with 12 beds.
